I picked up a Schumacher jump starter last year after getting stranded in a parking lot with a dead battery. It’s been a lifesaver a few times already, but I’m not 100% sure I’m treating it right. I usually just toss it in the trunk and forget about it until I need it, but someone told me you’re supposed to top up the charge every couple of months even if you’re not using it. Do you guys actually do that? Also curious if anyone has tips on keeping the clamps in good condition, since mine already look a bit rough.

LATTE - noun, pronounced latt-te
Large stone pillars (håligi) capped by stone capitals (tåsa) carved by the ancient Chamorro people to use as building supports. The latte stones have been made of limestone, basalt, or sandstone, and quarries have been found on all of the larger islands of the Marianas.

I’ve seen a lot of people keep their portable jump starters in the glove box or under the seat, but extreme heat or cold can mess with the battery over time. I usually rotate my gear between the garage and the car depending on the season, and that’s helped mine hold up pretty well. Even if it seems like extra effort, it beats finding out the pack won’t hold a charge when you really need it.
Yeah, you definitely don’t want to just leave it sitting without checking the charge. I’ve been using a Schumacher charger/maintainer for years on my truck battery, and I learned the hard way that ignoring the maintenance side shortens the life of the unit. I try to top it up every 2–3 months, even if I haven’t used it. As for the clamps, I just wipe them down with a dry cloth after use and store the cables neatly so they don’t kink. Honestly, digging through the manuals at https://manuals.online/schumacher gave me a couple of simple but useful tricks I wouldn’t have thought of, like not leaving it connected while charging. It’s small stuff, but it makes the gear last longer.
